What momme weight means in silk — and how to judge quality before you buy

Momme is the unit that tells you how much a silk weighs, and it is the single most reliable signal of silk quality. One momme equals roughly 4.34 grams per square metre, so a higher momme number means a denser, heavier, more durable silk. For clothing you intend to keep and wash, a momme weight in the high teens is a sensible floor; anything much lighter tends to feel thin and wear out faster.

That one paragraph answers most of the question. The rest of this piece explains the ranges, why the number matters more than the marketing, and what to ask before you spend.

The momme scale, in plain terms

Silk is sold across a wide range of weights, and each range suits a different job:

  • 6–8 momme — very light, sheer silks such as chiffon and georgette. Beautiful for scarves and overlays, too fragile for everyday garments.

  • 8–12 momme — habotai and lightweight linings. Soft, but prone to snagging and showing wear.

  • 16–19 momme — the working range for silk clothing. Heavy enough to drape well and survive regular wear, light enough to stay fluid against the skin.

  • 19–22 momme — quality garments and bedding. Opaque, substantial, long-lived.

  • 25 momme and above — heavy luxury bedding and structured pieces.

The takeaway most shoppers miss: a beautiful-looking silk at 11 momme and a hard-wearing silk at 19 momme can look almost identical in a photograph. The difference shows up only after a few months of wearing and washing.

Why the number matters more than the adjectives

Words like "pure", "luxurious" and "100% silk" tell you nothing about durability. A silk can be 100% mulberry silk and still be a flimsy 8 momme. Momme is the number that cuts through that, because it measures the actual density of the weave rather than the marketing around it.

Denser silk also behaves better in daily life. Higher momme silk resists snagging, holds its colour through more washes, drapes with more weight, and is less likely to turn translucent when worn. If a listing does not state the momme weight, that absence is itself information — quality silk producers tend to publish the number, because it works in their favour.

What "mulberry silk" adds to the picture

Momme tells you the weight; the type of silk tells you the fibre. Mulberry silk comes from silkworms fed exclusively on mulberry leaves, which produces a longer, finer, more uniform filament than wild or mixed silks. The result is a smoother surface, a cleaner sheen, and fewer weak points along the thread.

So the two questions worth asking together are simple: is it mulberry silk, and what is the momme weight. A high-momme mulberry silk is the combination that lasts.

A note on certification

Beyond weight and fibre, it is worth knowing how a silk has been finished. OEKO-TEX certification means the fabric has been independently tested for harmful substances and skin-safe dyes — relevant for anything worn against the skin, and especially for sleepwear and underwear. It does not measure quality the way momme does, but it tells you the silk has been made responsibly.

Where SILKILINEN sits

For transparency: SILKILINEN is an Irish brand based in Donegal, working in 19-momme mulberry silk. Some pieces are made by hand in our Donegal studio; others are made for us by skilled specialist makers elsewhere, and each product page tells you where that piece is made. We chose 19 momme deliberately — heavy enough to last and to drape with real weight, fluid enough to feel like silk should. We publish the number because we think you should be able to judge silk on its specifications, not on adjectives.

Quick answers

What is a good momme weight for silk clothing? For garments you will wear and wash regularly, look for 16–19 momme or higher. Below about 16 momme, silk starts to feel thin and wears out sooner.

Is higher momme always better? Higher momme is denser and more durable, but not always more suitable — very light silks exist for a reason, such as sheer scarves. For everyday clothing and sleepwear, higher is generally better up to around 22 momme.

Does momme weight affect how silk feels? Yes. Higher momme silk has more weight in the hand, drapes more fluidly, and is less likely to feel flimsy or turn see-through when worn.

What momme weight does SILKILINEN use? SILKILINEN works in 19-momme mulberry silk. Where each piece is made is stated on its product page.

How do I check the momme weight before buying? Look for it stated on the product page. If a silk listing does not mention momme weight at all, it is reasonable to ask — quality producers usually publish it.
