A pure silk scarf — 100% silk twill, hand-illustrated, hand-rolled edges, 80cm x 80cm.
A scarf drawn from one life, in three countries.
Every piece on this silk is from somewhere I have actually been:
The pyramid is the view from my roof in Egypt — every sunrise, every sunset.
The palm tree is from Hurghada, beside the Red Sea.
The carriage is from the Royal Carriages Museum
in Cairo.
The column is the Acropolis. I studied ancient Greek and Roman history as a student. The first time I saw it standing in front of me, I teared up.
The stars are Crete at night — the brightest sky I have ever seen.
The swans are Ireland. The first time I ever saw one.
The harp is the first gift my husband gave me.
The harp is the strangest part of it. I drew it because of him. Only later did I learn that the harp on the Irish flag traces back to Egypt — gifted across the sea in old myth by Scota, daughter of a pharaoh. It links the place I'm from to the place I live now. Which is also what this scarf does.
Wear it tied at the neck with a white shirt. Wear it knotted around the handle of a bag. Wear it loose over your shoulders when you're far from home and want to carry it with you.
A life, in 80 centimeters of silk.
A pure silk scarf, hand-illustrated and hand-rolled, 80cm x 80cm. Drawn from one life in three countries — Egypt, where I'm from. Greece, where I studied. Ireland, where I live. Every motif on this silk is from somewhere I have actually been.
